Do You Think That White People Need To Pay ‘Reparations’ For Slavery?

The United States owes African-Americans reparations for slavery, a recent report by a United Nations-affiliated group said.

The UN Working Group of Experts on People of African Descent said that compensation is necessary to combat the disadvantages caused by 245 years of legally allowing the sale of people based on the color of their skin.

The U.N. group warned that the U.S. has not confronted its legacy of “racial terrorism.”

The report, which is non-binding, specified that reparations can come in a variety of ways, including educational opportunities, psychological rehabilitation, debt cancellation and formal apologies.

Some institutions have started to take these steps. Georgetown University announced earlier this month it would offering free tuition for descendants of the 272 slaves that were sold in 1838 to help pay the university’s debts.

The U.N. report also linked past injustices to recent police killings of black men that have sparked protests across the U.S.

“Contemporary police killings and the trauma that they create are reminiscent of the past racial terror of lynching,” the report said.

The U.S. created a reparations plan in the immediate aftermath of the Civil War that stated that freed families would be granted “forty acres of tillable land” and a mule from the Union Army. The plan, proposed by Union General William T. Sherman after meetings with black community leaders in Savannah, Georgia, was reversed by President Andrew Johnson and the land was returned to plantation owners.

Do white Americans need to have an added tax to pay reparations to black people because of slavery? Should they have to pay more due to what their ancestors may or may not have participated in?

  1. My people were Irish and we were slaves. So get off it people. I want free education. I want to be angry. I deserve free everything, I want Irish lives matter, etc. Get over it and build a real life for yourselves like my family did. They lived in tents, they worked hard and I was the first college graduate in my family. I am very proud of that. grow up, people!!!!

  2. No! Me and my family weren’t there when it happened as millions of other Americans. Trillions in Tax Dollars have already been paid out over the past 50 years to help African Americans. This is not meant to be mean spirited, or cast a negative light on the issue. What African Americans need to do is leave the Democratic Party. It’s the party that keeps them in poverty from the Southern Plantation to the Government Plantation!

  3. Tell the UN send them back to Africa and then look for the people who sold them and then ask those people to pay for them not us because we did not order them. tell UN return to sender.

  4. Hell No !!!!! We white people owe you blacks 0 notta dame thing. Grow up except history for what it was and move on. Some Blacks just hold themselves back from moving on . Stop living in the past.

  5. NO!!! ME OR MY FAMILY NEVER OWNED A SLAVE!!! I DON’T OWE ANYONE ANYTHING!!! I HAD TO WORK HARD MY WHOLE LIFE, TO BE ABLE TO HAVE WHAT I HAVE, WHICH ISN’T MUCH. THAT’S SOMETHING THE BLACKS SHOULD LEARN TO DO!! IF YOU WORK HARD YOU CAN GET A FEW THINGS FOR YOURSELVES!!! GET OFF OF WELFARE AND FOOD STAMPS AND START WORKING, THEN YOU WON’T HAVE TO TRY TO GET CHARITY!!!

  6. Absolutely not, if they want reparations for slavery, then they should hit their chiefs in Africa who sold them into slavery. Plus, if anyone deserves reparations for slavery this would be the Native Americans, who suffered at the hand of the white men for 100 of years. Get off your butts and go work just like the rest of Americans do, you are not entitled, so get that out of your pea brain.

  7. No they should not be payed anything. If people would go back and look at history when the slaves were freed. I do believe they were given fifty acres of land or so . So the ones that were actually slaves were given reparations . So every one. Needs to get over this crap and let it go.
