During the barrage of bullets coming down on the crowd at the Route 91 Harvest Festival on Sunday evening, Thomas Gunderson was struck in the leg. But, Gunderson didn’t let being injured stop him from standing up and showing some respect for President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump when they came to the hospital to meet him and shake his hand.
The Daily Mail reported that Gunderson, who is a resident of California and was attending the concert, was running towards the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino as the hailstorm of bullets began to rain down on the crowd. More than 20,000 people were at the venue for the country music festival.
While Gunderson was trying to make his way out, he didn’t realize he was running towards the origin of the shooting, and his leg was pierced by a bullet. He ended up in the hospital to be treated.
President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump made their way to Las Vegas on Wednesday in order to visit local area hospitals and meet victims of the horrific mass shooting. They wanted to offer their support to those injured on Sunday evening.
Before Melania came into Gunderson’s room, he was working on sitting up in his bed. But, Melania urged Gunderson to relax and stay comfortable and said “Hi Thomas. How are you?”
Thomas Gunderson responded by saying, “I’m okay.” He then uses the strength he had left to bring himself to his feet and stand to shake her hand.
Gunderson couldn’t stand for long, however, and sat back down on his bed. President Trump was visible in the doorway taking a few moments to say hello to the nurses and doctors along with other hospital staff.
As President Trump makes his way into Gunderson’s hospital room, Gunderson drags himself out of the bed to stand again. President Trump stated, “Hey, this guy looks tough to me.” He goes on to shake Gunderson’s hand.
Gunderson thanked President Trump for his visit and President Trump gave him a pat on the back and asked him, “How’s it going?”
Gunderson shared the video of his meeting with President Trump to his Facebook page. He wrote, “I will never lie down when the President of this great country comes to shake my hand! There may be plenty of issues in this country but I will always respect my country, my president and my flag. Shot in the leg or not, I will stand to show my President the respect he deserves.”

So, in a world where football players think that they are above standing for the flag and for our country, it’s refreshing to see a true patriot like Gunderson. Even though he was shot in the leg, Gunderson stood for President Trump and for the United States.
